RE/MAX began in 1973 in Denver as a vision of a gentleman named Dave Liniger. Mr. Liniger, upset with the bad name that poorly trained novices and casual part-time associates were giving to the real estate profession, came to the conclusion that he wanted to start a company where home buyers and sellers could walk into any office in any market and receive the level of service that only full-time, experienced professionals could provide. As a former top agent himself, Liniger set up offices so that associates would equally share expenses of the operation, which of course meant that each associate had to be skilled enough to generate the income needed to pay a set fee every month. Traditionally, office owners require agents to pay the office half their earnings to cover operating expenses. For those novice, part-time, and marginally producing associates coming from the traditional approach of real estate sales where those who didn't sell weren't out any expenses, the thought of facing a monthly bill for office expenses was terrifying. Only the most successful and competent associates saw the benefits to the RE/MAX system. Interestingly enough, once these professionals started to work together in the same office, their skills improved even more! Although RE/MAX growth in the early years wasn't stellar, the company has grown every month since its inception. The concept that seemed so elementary to Dave Liniger was extremely threatening to the the industry's 'status quo'. At the close of 1973, even though concerted efforts had been made to impede the growth of this concept, there were still 8 offices holding 21 associates. By 1997, RE/MAX International had grown to encompass over 20 countries and 5 continents, including a roster of more than 45,000 associates world wide. In 1994, to better promote professionalism and knowledge of real estate, the RE/MAX Satellite Network was launched, broadcasting continuing education programming six hours a day to RE/MAX offices across the country. Also that same year, RE/MAX endorsed the Accredited Buyer Representative professional designation, to be conferred by the Real Estate Buyer's Agent Council - - - yet another radical change to the industry championed by RE/MAX. About half of all ABR designations are held by RE/MAX professionals. In addition, of all professionals who hold the designation of Certified Relocation Professional - - - a designation conferred by the Employee Relocation Council which confirms an associate's expertise in working with relocating corporate employees and is considered one of the toughest designations to earn in residential real estate - - - nearly 70% are RE/MAX professionals. The RE/MAX approach has had a profound impact on the industry: today there are many imitators, but none have been able to match the level of professionalism or knowledge held by RE/MAX associates. Every day, the perception held by both industry insiders and consumers in which RE/MAX is the ultimate where only top real estate professionals affiliate continues to grow and flourish.
